How Mahashivaratri is celebrated: On the night of this festival, the devotees of Lord Shiva fast and worship Lord Shiva throughout the night. Fruits, flowers, belpatra, milk and honey are offered as prasad to the "Shivalinga" of Lord Shiva in the temple. Shiva-devotees in the temple sing hymns and chant "Om Namah Shivaya", a mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva. Apart from fasting and offering prayers, devotees participate in Mahashivratri processions. Fairs are also organized in some parts of India, where people come to participate in song, music, dance and various cultural activities.
Story: In Hindu mythology, there are many legends/stories associated with the celebration of Mahashivaratri. One such story is of the night when Lord Shiva first performed the "Tandava", the dance of destruction and creation. Another legend/story states that it was on this night that Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison produced during the churning of the ocean, thereby saving the world from destruction.
