Introduction: Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman was an Indian physicist. He is often known as C.V. Raman. He had made unprecedented contribution to science. He discovered the “Raman effect”.
Birth and place: C.V. Raman was born on 7 November 1888 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. His father Chandrashekhar Ramanathan Iyer was a physics professor. His mother Parvathi Ammal was a housewife.

Education: His primary education was in Visakhapatnam only. He passed the matriculation examination at the age of twelve (12). He also studied religious texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata. He stood 1st in the BA examination.

Discovery of the Raman Effect: Raman's fascination with light began at an early age. He discovered the Raman effect in 1928. He was the one who explained how light changes its color when passing through a transparent substance. For this discovery he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. He was the first Indian to receive this award. His discovery laid the foundation for techniques such as Raman spectroscopy.

Establishment of Raman Research Institute: C.V. Raman was deeply committed to education and research. He served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and later established the Raman Research Institute in 1948, where he continued his scientific investigations until his death in 1970.

Death: C.V. Raman died on 21 November 1970 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. His legacy will always inspire the Indian youth.
