A day on Mercury is longer than its year. Mercury takes approximately 59 Earth days to complete one rotation on its axis. Mercury takes 88 Earth days to revolve around the Sun. This means that a day on Mercury, from sunrise to sunset, lasts about 176 Earth days.
Mercury's surface temperatures can reach as high as 430 °C (800 °F) during the day and drop to an extremely cold −180 °C (−290 °F) at night. This large difference in temperature is due to the lack of an adequate atmosphere on Mercury to retain heat.
