Introduction: Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram is an important festival of Islamic religion which is celebrated by the Muslim community. This festival is celebrated for the first ten days of the month of Muharram. This festival is also called the festival of mourning. Fasting (roza) is also observed during Muharram.

Ashura: The important day of Muharram is Ashura, which is celebrated on the tenth day of Muharram. Remembering this day, Muslims mourn among themselves on the day of Ashura. On the day of Ashura, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad was martyred in the field of Karbala along with his family and companions.
Mourning: Muslims adopt special events and rituals during Muharram. Muharram includes rituals such as taking out mourning procession and flogging/whipping oneself. These are all ways of expressing their sense of mourning and their deep sorrow.
Battle of Karbala: The important historical incident of Muharram is the Battle of Karbala in which Imam Hussain and his family members lost their lives. This incident had caused deep sorrow and grief in the Muslim community.
