Introduction: Holika Dahan is celebrated a day before the 'Holi festival'. It is a Hindu festival. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Phalgun month, which falls in February or March. The festival marks the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring season. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India.

Legend/Story: The story behind Holika Dahan is related to the Hindu mythology of the demon king Hiranyakashipu/Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad. Hiranyakashyap believed that he was the most powerful person in the world. He wanted everyone to worship him as a god. However, his son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father. Hiranyakashyap became very angry with Prahlad and tried many times to kill his son but he always failed.

Finally, Hiranyakashyap took the help of his sister Holika. Holika had a boon that she could not burn in fire. She took Prahlad in her lap and sat in the fire. Holika believed that fire would not harm her. However, due to her evil intentions, the boon did not work and Holika was burnt to ashes. Lord Vishnu saved the devotee Prahlad from burning in the fire.

Before burning the Holika, people gather and pray to Lord Vishnu and do worship to seek his blessings. They walk around the fire. While circumambulating they sing songs and dance. They throw gulal and sprinkle water on each other. While celebrating Holika Dahan, people also feed each other sweets.
