Place of Birth and Parents: Tatya Tope was born on 16 February 1814 in Maharashtra, India. His father's name was Pandurang Rao Bhatt and his mother's name was Rukhmabai. Tatya Tope was the eldest of his eight siblings.

How Tatya Tope got his name: Tatya Tope was not his real name. His real name was Ramchandra Pandurang Rao Yawalkar. There is a story behind the name Tatya Tope, it is said that Bajirao gave a priceless and unique cap/hat to Tatya. He always used to wear that cap/hat. Due to always wearing a cap/hat, people started calling him by the name of Tatya Tope. That's why he got the name Tatya Tope.

Skill: Tatya Tope was a brave man. He was completely expert in the art of war. He was completely proficient in handling all types of weapons.

Role in the Revolt of 1857: Tatya Tope's role in the Great Revolt of 1857 was the most important and inspiring. In the Revolt of 1857, Tatya Tope was appointed as the commander. The command of the battle of Jhansi was given in the hands of Tatya Tope. Tatya Tope along with Jhansi’s Rani Lakshmi Bai fought many battles/wars with the British and he also defeated the British many times in battle/war with his war policy. Even after the death of Jhansi's Rani Lakshmibai, Nana Saheb Peshwa, Rao Saheb, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Tatya Tope took command of the rebels and continued to fight with the British.

Death: Three things/stories are told about Tatya's death. First story: He was hanged on 18 April 1859 in Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh) after being caught by the British. Second story: The British caught another person thinking it to be Tatya Tope and hanged him. Third story: He took his last breath in the year 1909 and was duly cremated by his family. Tatya Tope will always be remembered for his contribution to the Revolt of 1857.
