Introduction: Makar Sankranti is one of the major festivals of India. This festival is celebrated with great fanfare every year on 14th January (Pausha month). The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn in the month of Pausha. On this day the Sun leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn. This festival comes during the winter season.

How Makar Sankranti is celebrated: This festival of Makar Sankranti is done for Lord Sun, so on this day everyone takes bath early in the morning. 3-4 tilkut, rice, sweets, incense sticks and some money are kept in a plate. Lord Surya is worshipped with all these items. After this jaggery, sesame, tilkut, blanket, fruits, money etc. are also donated. After the puja, all the family members sit together and enjoy eating tilkut, laddu, curd chuda (dahi chura). On this day kites are also flown in many places. This day is very important for the farmers because on this day a new crop is also harvested by the farmers. After the harvest, the houses of the farmers are filled with food.

There are many stories behind celebrating this festival :
1) It is said that on this day Lord Vishnu ended the thousands of years of war between the gods and the Asuras (Demons). Therefore, this day is considered as the festival of the end of evil and the beginning of the era of truth.

2) It is believed that on the day of Makar Sankranti, Goddess Ganga joined the ocean while following Bhagiratha.

3) It is also believed that Bhishma Pitamah got a boon from his father that he can give up his life only if he wants to give up his life. He had the boon of euthanasia. According to the boon received, Bhishma Pitamah had decided to renounce the mortal form on this day itself. In this way he attained salvation on this day itself. That's why this day is considered very auspicious day.

4) It is believed that on this day Lord Surya himself goes to meet his son Shani at his house. At that time Lord Shani is representing Capricorn, because Shani Dev is the lord of Capricorn. On the day of Makar Sankranti, when a father visits his son, the disputes and differences between father and son are resolved. The relationship between father and son also become good. Hence this festival is given more importance.
