Introduction: The Statue of Unity is a statue of the great Indian leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was the first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India. Sardar Patel is also known as the Iron Man of India. He played his important role in the integration / unity of India. The Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world. Its length/height is 182 meters (597 feet). The Statue of Unity is a symbol of the national unity of India. This statue is located in the state of Gujarat, India. On 31 October 2013, on the birthday of Sardar Patel, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the memorial and after the statue was built, it was inaugurated on 31 October 2018 on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.

Construction: The construction of the Statue of Unity was initiated by Larsen & Toubro and designed by Ram V. Sutar. The construction work of this huge statue started on 31 October 2013 and in the middle of 2018 this statue was ready. The cost of making this statue was about 3000 crores. The Statue of Unity has been made from materials like iron, steel, concrete and bronze etc. It took about 5 years to complete it.
Campaign: The Government of Gujarat had announced this project in 2010. This campaign was named "Statue of Unity Campaign". A target was set to collect iron from farmers across the country to build the memorial. In view of the campaign, farmers of India donated around 5,000 metric tons of iron. To make this campaign a success, a marathon named "Run for Unity" was organized all over India on 15 December 2013, in which thousands of people participated in this marathon to maintain the unity of the country.
Contribution of Sardar Patel: After getting independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ji had built a united India by integrating the princely states and this work/contribution of his can never be forgotten. Sardar Patel had created Indian unity by merging / integration of 562 small and big princely states into the Indian Union.
