Durga Puja is the most important festival of Hindus. Durga Puja is considered to be the main festival especially for the people of Bengal, but this festival is celebrated with great pomp throughout India. Goddess Durga is given the highest status among all the deities. This festival is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil.
This grand festival is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and worship of Goddess Durga. This festival is celebrated every year for ten days in the month of Ashwin. During this time, devotees keep fast for nine days and worship Goddess Durga to get the blessings. The tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami, because on this day Goddess Durga conquered a demon.

There are two very interesting stories behind the belief of Durga Puja:
First story: There was a very powerful demon named Mahishasura. No one could defeat Mahishasura. Once, Mahishasura invaded heaven to conquer the gods. After that an internal power was created by Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva), who was named Durga. Maa Durga was an amazing woman power with ten hands and Durga had weapons in all her hands. Goddess Durga was given many inner powers to defeat Mahishasura. Maa Durga killed Mahishasura on the tenth day after a full nine-day war. That tenth day is also called Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
Second story: It is also believed that the worship of Maa Durga started/began when Lord Rama worshiped Maa Durga to defeat demon Ravana, the king of Lanka and to gain power from Goddess Durga. Lord Rama defeated Ravana after worshiping Maa Durga.
Idol immersion: On the tenth day after worshiping Goddess Durga for 9 days, devotees immerse the idol of Goddess Durga in water and pray for the coming of Goddess Durga with many blessings next year.
