Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India on 2nd October. It is a national festival. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. He was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhiji's birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father's name was Karamchand Gandhi. His mother's name was Putlibai. Mahatma Gandhi was a great freedom fighter who played an important role in liberating India from the British Raj. Gandhiji considered truth and non-violence to be the core of life.

Mahatma Gandhi
India was a slave of the British before 15 August 1947. Mahatma Gandhi launched several movements to make India independent. Non-cooperation movement in 1920, Dandi March or Salt Satyagraha in 1930 and Quit India Movement in 1942 were carried out by Gandhiji. Gandhiji continued his non-violence movement until the country attained independence. During this time Gandhiji also went to jail many times. It was with his tireless efforts and the cooperation of other revolutionaries that he was successful in liberating India from British rule on 15 August 1947.

On the day of Gandhi Jayanti, there is a leave/day off in schools and government offices across the country. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in all the states and union territories of India. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti i.e. 2 October, different types of programs are organized in different parts of the country. Gandhiji's most loved hymn Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram is sung during the celebration of this day.
