Ganesh Chaturthi is a main festival of Hindus. This festival is celebrated with great pomp across India. Lord Ganesha is worshiped on Ganesh Chaturthi. Whenever an auspicious work is done, Lord Ganesha is worshiped first. According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi festival is celebrated every year on Chaturthi of the month of Bhadrapada (August or September). According to the Purana/Mythology), Lord Ganesh was born on this day. This festival is the longest festival lasting 11 days. Another name of Lord Ganesha is also Vighnaharta, because Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles i.e. removes sorrows and brings happiness in the house.

There is a very popular story behind celebrating Ganesh festival: -
Once all the gods reached Lord Shiva and asked him who should be considered as the first to be worshiped, that is, which deity to be worshiped first. Then Shiva said that he who first revolves the whole earth will be considered the best and will be worshiped first. Hearing this, all the gods got out of their vehicles to revolve around the earth. But Ganesha's vehicle was a mouse and Ganesha's body was gross, so how could Ganesh revolve around the entire earth. Then Ganesh ji, showing his cleverness and prudence, completed three revolve of his father Lord Shiva and mother Parvati and stood with folded hands.
Seeing Lord Shiva Ganesha's understanding and respect and faith towards his parents, he told Ganesha that no one is smarter and better than you in this whole world. By doing three revolve of mother and father, you have completed the circumambulation of the three locos(लोक), whose virtue you have got. Therefore from today, any person who will worship you before starting any work, he will not have to face any kind of difficulties.
Therefore, Lord Ganesha is worshiped on Ganesh Chaturthi. After worshiping him for 10 days, the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed on the 11th day and is wished to come back next year.
