On this day, the sisters apply tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and tie a Rakhi on their wrist and feed them sweets. After receiving a Rakhi from the sister, the brother gives a gift to his sister and takes the responsibility of protecting the sister.

It is not just celebrated among real brothers and sisters but also among cousins. On this day, there is a happy atmosphere in the whole family and on this day special dishes are also made in the house. In Delhi and many other states, women are not charged tickets on the occasion of Rakhi in bus, train and metro.

There are many stories behind celebrating this festival, one of which is mentioned in the Mahabharata: -
When Krishna killed Shishupal. While slaughtering Shri Krishna, he suffered a minor injury and started bleeding. When Draupadi saw this, he immediately tore the piece of her sari and tied it on Krishna's hand. At that time Krishna pledged to protect Draupadi forever. Since then, the practice of making Raksha Bandhan festival started on the full moon day of Sawan Mass (Shravan mass).
