Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born on the 19th November 1917 at Allahabad. Her Father’s name was Jawahar Lal Nehru, who was also Prime Minister of India and her Mother’s name was Kamla Nehru, who was a freedom fighter. Indira Gandhi got her primary education at Allahabad. She went to University of Oxford in England for higher studies. In 1942 she was married to Mr. Firoz Gandhi, she had two sons Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.

In 1959 she was elected President of Indian national congress. She had an intimate understanding of the current affairs of the world. After the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966, Indira Gandhi served as prime minister until India held the next election. Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India twice. She was Prime Minister of India of India from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984. She fought fearlessly against communalism and sectarianism.

Indira Gandhi was known for her leadership skills. He had firm determination and strong will power. She was the woman behind defeating Pakistan in 1971. In recognition of her services to the nation she receives the highest award of Bharat Ratna from the president.

On the black Wednesday morning of 31st October 1984, she was shot dead at her residence by two of her security guards. In her death the nation lost a worthy maker of India.
