Essay On Holi
Holi is the main festival of Hindus. Holi is a festival of colours which is celebrated every year in the month of Phalgun (March). This festival generates feelings of love and brotherhood among people. On the day of Holi, all eat cooked food items like gujjya, papad, dahi-bhale, halwa, pani-puri etc. It is a two days festival commencing on a full moon night with Holika Dahan. Main Holi festival is celebrated the next day of Holika Dahan.
Behind the Holi festival there is a popular story:-
Hiranyakashyap was an Demon king who had a son Prahalad. Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, while his father was a strong opponent of Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted to kill his own son because Prahalad believed Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted his son to call him Lord or not to Vishnu. So, he tried to kill Prahlad.
Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika had a boon from God that no one could burn her in the fire. She had a magic robe. This robe had the power to save the wearer from burning in fire. Prahlad's father asked for help from his sister Holika and both of them conspired to kill Prahalad. Hiranyakashyap ordered his sister to sit on a burning fire along with Prahlad. But the result was the opposite to what the evil demon king planned. Holika did so but unfortunately, she died in the fire and Prahlad was saved by the Lord.
Since then, people of Hindu religion celebrate the festival of Holi with great fanfare every year as a victory for good against evil.
